The castle every Slovak child knows from a storybook
Bojnický zámok rises on a travertine rock above the spa town of Bojnice, in the heart of Slovakia. First mentioned in 1113, it grew from a wooden fort into a stone castle of the Poznan family and was reshaped by every owner since — most decisively by Count Ján Pálfi, who between 1889 and 1910 rebuilt it as the romantic French-Gothic fantasy you see today. Inside is the Slovak National Museum's art-history collection; below it, a natural cave 22 metres across.

The Pálfi legacy
A count who wanted a castle from a painting
Ján Pálfi travelled France's Loire valley and came home determined to build something as romantic. He never lived to see the result — he died in 1908, two years before the last scaffolding came down — but his will asked that the castle be opened to the public with its art left in place. It has been a museum ever since.

Looks like something out of a Disney film, and the inside lives up to it — the Golden Hall ceiling is extraordinary. Book the tour ahead in summer; the queue at the gate was long.
The cave under the castle was the surprise of the day. Lots of stairs on the route, so wear proper shoes, but the guide kept the group moving and the stories were great.
Easy day trip from Bratislava or Trenčín. The park around the castle is free, so we wandered first and then did the tour. Perfect for families.
